Dá-se início a temporada de premiações onde as associações da crítica e jornalistas ao redor do mundo (principalmente Estados Unidos) compartilham com o público suas escolhas dos melhores filmes e trabalhos audiovisuais do ano de 2021.
Essa fase da temporada é importante, pois, diferente das premiações tradicionais televisionadas como Oscar, Globo de Ouro, SAG etc, os críticos costumam apoiar projetos e performances que ainda estão apagados durante a temporada, seja por questões de campanha de suas distribuidoras, ou por não ter tido tanto destaque quando exibido.
A primeira associação a compartilhar com o público suas escolhas foi o Sunset Film Circle, associação de críticos iniciada no ano passado. Em 2020 as indicações foram lideradas por Sound of Metal e Minari com seis indicações cada, seguidos por The Father e Nine Days com cinco indicações. Sua categoria de melhor filme contava com The Father, The King of Staten Island, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, Minari Nine Days, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, Saint Maud, Sound of Metal no qual seis foram indicados ao Oscar na categoria principal (que contou com oito indicados no total).
Em 2020 o grande vencedor da premiação foi Promising Young Woman, de Emerald Fennell, que levou o prêmio de Melhor Filme e Melhor Atriz. O runner-up (segundo lugar) da edição foi Mank, de David Fincher. Nessa edição Dune e Spencer receberam sete indicações; Don’t Look Up seis; Belfast, Cyrano e The French Dispatch receberam cinco indicações; The Power of the Dog, Being the Ricardos e King Richard receberam quatro; e CODA três. Os vencedores e runner-up serão anunciados no dia 2 de dezembro.
